The Organic Synthesis Division was established in 2002. In the main field of interest of the group is the synthesis and related studies of porphyrin systems. Porphyrins, among others, take part in many important chemical transformations in nature (e.g., chlorophyll, heme, vitamin B12). They are also of potential use as biomimetic systems, novel materials, catalysts, and sensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment.

The investigations are focused on selective transformations of easily available meso-tetraarylporphyrins into derivatives of higher complexity.
